     Disruption - the trends and how business improvement professionals are doing their part to react to it 

    This year's event was attended by over 60 leading business improvement professionals across a range of organisations and industries including; financial, manufacturing, telecommunications, health and service industries. It was a day packed full of new perspectives, creative insights and opinions from other practitioners that challenged our current views of our own respective industries, our practices and its future.

    Key Take Aways from the Event

    Disruption is a continuous process of context, change and continuous questions  

    In his presentation, Opher Yom Tov (A former GM at IDEO, current senior advisor of Design and Innovation to several companies and a co-founder of Australian tech start up Airshr), spoke about what is causing disruption, why do Disruptors exist and how might we tackle it? 

    There is a common formula that all Disruptors follow: Context (and change of context) + Question (can we?, how might we?) = disruption. For example: Context: Restaurants have always played an essential role in the business, social, intellectual and artistic life of a thriving society. The major events of life, personal and professional, are celebrated in restaurants. Restaurants are more important than ever. The question – How might we take the restaurant to the people, rather than relying on our location? The answer/disruption: Food Trucks.

    What can we do to disrupt? Be paranoid, look for a burning platform; Embrace it, follow it, participate; Go back to first principles - Question everything; Partner and compete fiercely; Build and buy; Focus on your customer - Really focus; Ensure you have the right leaders and best people; Experiment. Always stay in beta.


    What the Duck? 

    Craig Gander ( L&D Manager of Greater Bank) spoke about their approach on how they are focused on building Capability rather than Competency. He highlighted this using Lego as an example – in the past, competency was measured based on the individual’s ability to build what is on the “box” (in this example - you were provided 6 Lego bricks and an image of a Lego duck). It is vital to shift our thinking toward measuring capability to maintain and create organisational value. If individuals were instead told “here is a box, what can you create from it?” The individuals are encouraged to be creative and inventive, they could make close to a million different varieties of ducks given the same six pieces. Imagine what else we are capable of making with those pieces? (Is out thinking framed by telling you to make a duck); what if you could add pieces you already own? (Bring your own experiences); What if you could add pieces from someone else in the team? Or pieces available in your network? The possibilities are endless and it is all about trying to unlock the potential of capable people. 


    Culture eats strategy for breakfast 

    Many thought Nepean Building & Infrastructure should close a few years ago as it was believed they could not remain competitive in Australia, where China presented massive competition in the commoditized manufacturing market. Dr Anthony Sive (Managing Director of Nepean Building & Infrastructure) spoke about the amazing story of how they have defied odds and are now very competitive by defining a very clear and easy to remember strategy (highest tonnes, cheapest tonnes, safest tonnes). Strategy that every single individual across the organisation knows what and how they contribute to delivering. Favourite quotes from this session: “culture is not part of the game, it is the game”; “Decision making at the lowest possible level”; “Relationship is everything: create the space – seek multiple perspectives, then get out of the way”!

    My biggest learning is not from a speaker or particular presentation; it was from talking to different people and making new acquaintances.

    These opportunities to share and story tell are invaluable - we need diversity to grow, to see things differently, to learn, to create and to drive even better results. Creating a continuous improvement culture in our organisation, one which strives to be one of the world's great service companies, helping our customers, communities and people to prosper and grow – starts with you and the story you tell.

    The AASSP Committee regularly hold Network drinks where members have the opportunity to mix with fellow practitioners in a fun and casual setting.  Members apply their learning as well as provide feedback to the Association on how it could enhance it's offerings to the broader improvement community.
